SOLAR COOKER PRODUCTION:

The organization as a means of reducing deforestation is encouraging the production and utilization of solar cookers by rural communities. This project is meant to help in reducing over dependence on forest resources for fuel energy. We are grateful to solar cookers international USA, www.solarcooking.org for their support in terms of instructive and learning materials.

As part of the project   different communities shall be trained on how to produce and make use of solar cookers and ovens using the available local materials.

Community Total Led Sanitation (CLTS)

About   Community Total Led Sanitation (CLTS):

It is based on facilitating a process of stimulating collective sense of disgust and shame amongst community members to confront the crude facts about mass open defecation and poor hygiene practices and their negative impacts on the entire community. community members collectively realize the terrible impact of open defecation: that they will be ingesting one another”shit” so long as open defecation continues. This realization mobilizes them into initiating collective local action to improve the situation in the community. Generally communities react strongly and immediately to try to find ways to change this situation through their own efforts

JUSTIFICATION FOR THE PROJECT:
In Nigeria, sanitation coverage is 40% according to Federal Ministry of Water Resources. The Sanitation Millenium Development  Goal is way off track if the current trend persists. Sanitation investment are usually targeted towards individual households and depend on that household’s grasp of hygiene behaviour. ((Source:National Sanitation Task Group Manual, Abuja, 2008)

Sanitation and safe water utilization are important issues having global concern today.
According to the Executive Director, Stockholm International   Water Initiative, we cannot achieve the Millennium Development Goals without addressing properly the issue of Sanitation and Water supply, as they are significantly interlinked with child’s mortality, maternal health, primary education ,gender equity, poverty  reduction, hunger and environmental sustainability. Sustainable access to improved sanitation, good hygienic habits and decent water unlocks the door that bars so many millions of people from climbing out of poverty. A lack of capacity at local level and lack of awareness within communities and households have been major impediments to project sanitation. Reports from both World Health Organization and UNICEF  Joint

Monitoring Programme for Water and Sanitation strongly and righteously points that inability to provide the inhabitants of this world with sanitary solutions that prevent sicknesses and poor health ,protects the environment and provide dignity and privacy would be our greatest failure. The effects for mankind are devastin:. Children die by millions every year from easily preventable maladies such as diarrhea; parents cannot support their families since they are sick and unable to earn a living; hospital beds are filled by people who should not need to be in them; Rivers, lakes and groundwater sources are polluted by domestic wastewater ,agricultural runoff and industrial waste discharges to point where a water”hydrocide’ has occurred.(source:Stockholm Int Water Inst pub 2008).
